World Cancer Day

World Cancer Day

The international day against cancer was created with the objective of increasing awareness and mobilizing society to advance in the prevention and control of this disease.

What is cancer?

Cancer starts when in some part of the body the
cells begin to grow out of control. There are many types of cancer,
but they all start due to this uncontrolled cell growth. CITATION Ins18 \ l 2058 (Institute
Mexicano del Seguro Social, 2018)

Types of cancer

There are more than 100 types of cancer. Cancer types receive,
generally, the name of the organs or tissues where cancers form.
For example, lung cancer begins in the cells of the lung, and cancer
The brain begins in the cells of the brain. Cancers can also
described according to the type of cell that forms them, as an epithelial cell or
squamous cell.

Main categories of cancers:

  • Carcinoma
  • Sarcoma
  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoma

There are two main types of lymphomas:

             > Hodgkin lymphoma

             > Non-hodgkin lymphoma

  • Multiple myeloma
  • Melanoma
  • Brain and spinal cord tumors

Recommendations by the IMSS to reduce the risk of suffering from cancer:

1. Do not use tobacco

Smoking damages almost every organ in the human body. Is
linked to at least 15 different types of cancer and is associated with 90%
of all lung cancer cases.

2. Maintain a healthy weight throughout life

Being overweight (overweight / obese) is associated with a
high risk of developing many types of cancer, including breast cancer
(in postmenopausal women), colon, endometrium, kidney and esophagus.

If you already have excess weight, remember that reducing it has
benefits to your health.

3. Lead a physically active lifestyle

Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity
moderate to vigorous, for 5 or more days of the week. Children and adolescents
they must carry out at least 1 hour a day of physical activity, moderate or intense.

Limit activities that require sitting or lying.

4. Eat more fruits, vegetables and less red meat

Limit your consumption of processed meats and red meat, both
have been linked to colon cancer.

Consume at least the equivalent of 2 1/2 cups of
vegetables and fruits, per day.

5. Avoid or limit alcohol consumption

Alcohol consumption can be a cause of mouth cancer,
pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver and breast. For each of these types of
cancer, the risk increases considerably with the intake of more than 2 drinks
per day.

6. Do not expose yourself to the sun’s rays

Sun exposure is the most common cause of cancer of the
skin. Most skin cancers occur on exposed parts of the
body, including face, hands, forearms, and ears.

7. Get an Annual PREVENIMSS Checkup
